Recent Changes to E-Verify

August 13, 2014--Since its launch in 1999, E-Verify, USCIS¡¯s online tool for employment authorization verification, has gradually become more and more widely used and user-friendly. The latest changes to E-Verify include the addition of a Duplicate Case Alert, which alerts users if they enter a social security number that matches an existing case; addition of an employee email field, allowing the system to notify employees directly by email about tentative nonconfirmations and other issues; and a new photo tool that will display any photo on record with E-Verify, enabling the user to compare it to the photo ID being presented.

E-Verify compares information from an employee's Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, to data from U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration records to confirm employment eligibility. The online system is used by over 500,000 employers, with about 1,400 more joining every week, and has verified nearly 24 million cases over the past 15 years. Less than 1% of cases are found not authorized for employment. E-Verify also includes a Self Check service for individuals to verify their employment eligibility.

Many of the recent changes to E-Verify have been based on ideas suggested at E-Verify Listens, an online community where users can suggest improvements and vote for their favorite ideas.
